I've been running isn't just an Embrace song: it's my life
It's been awhile since I've blogged. I could come up with some seemingly valid excuses to explain my absence, but the truth is that I've been avoiding it.
I remember the first moment I realized I enjoyed writing. I was a sixth grader at Stovall Middle School. Mrs. Hale was my English teacher, and she encouraged me to write stories. She said that I was a very imaginative and thoughtful child, which probably was her kind way of saying that I was a manipulative liar. I'd like to think that she recognized my stealthy ability to eavesdrop on adults and create fantastical stories to impress my classmates.
Near the end of my last good year as a child (because life fucking sucks after you turn 12), the sixth grade held a writing contest. Mrs. Hale encouraged us to "write our story."
As an awkward and abnormally short Asian kid in a predominantly non-Asian school, I wasn't sure that I wanted to share my story with my dumb ass peers.
My family immigrated to America in 1980 from Vietnam. Instead of moving to the area where all the Asian people lived in Houston, my grandfather decided that we should live where everyone else lived. And by everyone else, I mean, very mature-looking girls who wanted to murder me because they are fucking evil assholes. That's totally a hyperbolic statement. They weren't mature at all.
So, what I am trying to say is: I felt alone.
To compensate, I wrote a lot--in journals covered in stickers and locked with a tiny key.
For the sixth grade writing contest, I decided to write my mom's story. Mainly because she'd lived a much more interesting life that I had at the time, and because I truly believe that every mom deserves to have a story written about her at least once in her life.
A few days after I turned in my submission, Mrs. Hale asked me to stay after class to discuss my story. Maybe it was because she really wasn't well-versed in the subject of refugee camps and the Vietnam war, but my mom's story both shocked and impressed her. While we were talking, I just remember the look on her face. She was transported. Suddenly, I was transported. I had never felt that sort of elation.
For a long time, I carried that moment with me. I carried it all through my adolescence. I let it be the reason why I chose my career path. I let it push me until suddenly, it disappeared and became a distant memory that I no longer want to visit.
I wish I had a better reason.
I wish I weren't always running away.

Mum Says: Have a Baby! (What's New?)
MUM: What happened to your friend?
ME: What friend?
MUM: The ones that got divorced?
ME: Oh, um, they got divorced?
MUM: Well, if she'd had a baby, her husband wouldn't have left her!
ME: That's crazy.
MUM: No crazy! Babies solve everything.
ME: What friend?
MUM: The ones that got divorced?
ME: Oh, um, they got divorced?

My Current State of Distress
I've learned a few lessons this past week.
Scratch that.
I've made a few mistakes this week that forced me to learn some hard lessons.
Mistake #1: Not backing up data.
Lesson Learned: It can cost up to $2000 to recover lost data; therefore, triple back up your data. I am still crying tears of anger over this mistake.
Mistake #2: Not backing up data.
Lesson Learned: This mistake is so costly, it needs to be listed twice. :) BACK UP YOUR DATA PEOPLE - especially if you are a photo whore like myself.
Mistake #3: Trusting people to do the right thing.
Lesson Learned: People will rip you off! We had a garage sale this past weekend, and someone stole my stuffed, plushy unicorn. Wtf. The unicorn judges you.
Okay, so I didn't really make too many major mistakes this week - just the big fat one that's going to cost me a lot of Washingtons (BENJAMINS EVEN!), and I just wanted to blog about it and be all whiny and sad faced.
[Insert major sad face.]

So IT Begins.
One of my good friends is pregnant.
She is having a human.
She is reproducing.
A tiny person is coming out of her.
This means...
It's the beginning for us all.
The beginning of the end.
Muahahaha! I feel so dramatic.

That's Just Gross. Period. Literally.
Dear Lady,
I don't know your name, but I do know that you use the first stall in the women's bathroom on the second floor of our office building.
I don't know why you do this, but I do know that it is disgusting.
Please flush.
It's just good manners.
Plus, I am sick of seeing your little surprises.
Every.
Single.
Day.
Please be courteous.
Otherwise, you're just a nasty bitch.
Thanks.

WTF
Do you ever feel like you have no idea what you are doing?
And that everyone else has their shit together?
What the hell am I doing? Argh.

Steps to a Better Life
Step 1: Buy a new pair of shoes.
Step 2: Buy another pair of shoes.
Step 3: Okay, why not make it three?
C'est ma vie.

I Wish Upon a Star
I wish I could freeze a moment in time so that I could live in it whenever I wanted.
Not just in photos, but in real life.
Which moment in your life would you choose to return to?

Crazy Special Love
I love movies about relationships, especially those realistic ones that cut right to the core. Some of my all time favorites are Before Sunrise/&Sunset, 500 Days of Summer, Like Crazy, and The Notebook.
Oh, I mean Blue Valentine, not The Notebook, but who's to say that the Notebook can't happen? To me and every other steadfast romantic out there? Why are we all resigned to the destinies portrayed in Blue Valentine?
Anyway, we saw Celeste and Jesse recently, and it was almost wonderful.
It's a story about two BFFLs (that's Best Friend For Life) who just can't make it work, even though they obviously love each other and have a crazy special connection. If you can't make it work with your BFFL, who can you make it work with?
Obviously, life and obstacles ensue, and things just don't work out as planned.
I might be really naive here, but do relationships have to be so fraught with complications? Can't they be simple, if we want them to be?
Aren't we all just looking for our BFFL?
Why do we let them go when we find them?

Facebook has given many people carte blanche to post whatever the hell they want.
I respect everyone's right to an opinion. I just don't have to read it. So I unsubscribe.
This is a revelatory moment people. Let's keep it classy.
My Favorite Things to Read About
So, to help improve the enjoyability of everyone's news feed, I've listed the top ten things I like to read about:
- Food (pretty much anything edible)
- Travel (only cool places)
- Movies (only the really good and really terrible ones)
- Pets (only the cute ones)
- MY current celeb obsession (can't disclose at this time)
- Weird and beautiful photos (e.g., Ryan Gosling's dog wearing socks. OMG.)
- Inappropriate jokes (e.g., "What's the difference between PB and jam?")
- Celebratory news (e.g., "I'm NOT pregnant, woot!")
- Crazy beautiful things for really cheap (e.g. "Hey, I can give you free things!")
- Musical events (e.g., "Hey, I spotted Chris Martin at the W. Run fast!")
YOU ARE WELCOME. It was my pleasure.
P.S. Oh, I forgot babies and kids. Or DID I? Bahahaha!

Skinny Jeans Are Stupid
It's summer in Texas, which means that I don't have to wear pants for like five months.
Unfortunately, I made the mistake of trying to squeeze a pair on this morning.
#BFM
So, I did the only thing I knew how to do: I put on shorts.

Empty Rooms
Lately, I've been swimming in other people's lives.
Worrying. Wishing there were things I could do to make everything all right. I know it's out of my hands. People are in control of their own destinies.
Then, I started thinking about who I would turn to in a completely bleak and dire situation.
And I felt completely alone.

Written Words
I spent a copious amount of time during my youth (hand)writing letters - to EVERYONE, even people I hated. That is no lie. I had a lot of time on my hands.
Anyway, last night, I was thinking about how much I miss letters. I miss seeing written words and signatures; I miss the salutations and the niceties; I miss gently tearing open an envelope and unfolding a letter; and I especially miss seeing my name scrawled across the top of the page, "Dearest Thao".
For a second, I am someone's "dear" - it's too sweet for words.
I miss what the letter represents: a few moments someone has dedicated in their day to me, to us, to keep us connected. For me, this is the truest and most genuine gesture: the gift of time.
I miss reading and rereading their words until I had them memorized - to fully understand every sentiment, every nuance. These letters built the closest relationships of my youth.
It's been years since I've received a proper letter - no love letters, no generic inquiries from old friends - just a couple of words scrawled out here and there as an afterthought, and only on holidays and special occasions.
So, am I just a silly sentimentalist? When was the last time YOU'VE written a proper letter?
